The Campus Commons will be the new heart of the University of Northern Colorado. As the new Front Door of the campus, the project expresses the aspirations of UNC academics and student life. The performing and visual arts are signature academic programs at university and UNC seeks to showcase performances and arts education to set themselves apart.
Art spaces in the 115,000 SF building include a marquee Concert Hall [600 seat], Multipurpose Auditorium [400 seat], Music Rehearsal Studio, and Art Gallery. All these spaces find a balance between their own spatial / material expression, supporting performers and the demanding technical requirements of the arts.
The Concert Hall arrangement and architecture create intimate performance experiences regardless of how many of the 600+ seats are full. The sculpted masses enclose audience spaces and reduce the spaces’ visual volume. Warm and dynamic walnut subtly introduces warmth and is accentuated by dramatic architectural lighting to mask required aggressive acoustic shaping of outer walls.
The Multipurpose Auditorium takes material cues from the Concert Hall, but incorporates daylight, a retractable seating and stage. Demanding technical requirements coupled with convertibility and an unimposing aesthetic.
The Rehearsal Hall & Art Gallery exemplify the difficult and dirty work of creating simple, clean spaces. Demanding acoustical and visual requirements are distilled to minimal expressions that recede when the artists perform.
All designs are governed by principles of enhancing art and user experience.
